About Us
From Steel to Strength
In the heart of the Cape Flats, a group of ordinary, hardworking people rise early with a singular mission: to provide a better life for their families. Their lives are shaped by cramped homes, gang violence and uncertain futures, yet they find their unity and resolve. Amongst them is a band of individuals who work tirelessly at the Myspace Steel Bed Factory, crafting each piece with hands that know hard work and tenderness. This factory is their livelihood, and the bunks and beds that they make are more than just furniture – they are the symbols of their hope, their dreams and desire to build something that will last for their children.
In August 1999, a devastating tornado ripped through Manenberg, leaving devastation in its wake. Amid the rubble and destruction, one thing stood out— a Myspace Steel Bunk Bed. Although bent and damaged, it was remarkably intact, a testament to the strength of both the material and the people who built them. For the workers at the factory, it was a pivotal moment. They realize that the products they create are more than just physical objects; they are foundations for resilience in the face of adversity. Their product, crafted in the heart of their struggles, has endured when so much else has not.
The factory grew and gained attention for its durable beds and the worker’s determination to provide lasting products for future generations. But, it was not easy : The legacy of apartheid’s economic divide still looms large. Access to resources is limited, and systemic barriers make it difficult for the community to grow beyond the constraints of their past. As the factory strives for expansion and growth, the staff battle many obstacles.
As the company began to gain momentum, a raft of cheap Chinese imports flooded the market with low-quality products, the factory faces fierce competition. Despite the pressure to cut corners, the workers refuse to compromise on quality, determined to produce something that lasts—a lasting symbol of their resilience and dedication.
United, the workers double down on their mission, focusing on craftsmanship and community pride. They innovate, work long hours, and invest in their future, standing firm against the tide of cheap imports.
Years later, the company is not just a manufacturer of steel bunk beds but a symbol of strength and endurance. The beds endure, passed down through generations, as the workers—once limited by circumstance—now build a legacy of lasting value, proving that quality and commitment can outlast even the toughest challenges.
